Halloween Blogfest: Karen Wiesner

Photobucket

A Halloween Interview with award-winning author Karen Wiesner.

If you had to choose one to be, would you prefer to become a vampire or a werewolf? Why?

I like writing about both (see my vampires in Blood of Amethyst and Creatures of the Night). It’s easier to romanticize a vampire, since a writer can make a vampire sexy and less ruthless, but my quartet of werewolf novellas in Woodcutter’s Grim Series, Volume II are sexy. If I had to be one, I’d probably choose a werewolf, since it’s possible to have a semblance of a normal life when there’s no full moon and, with all that fur, they must keep warm. Vampires would be always cold and I can’t stand being cold, lol!

Tell us what makes your villains so wicked.

Really, really good characters and villains (and the word “good” here refers to both well-drawn, intriguing characters) are a cornerstone of any great story. A villain will evoke sympathy, but not in the same way a hero will because most people can’t embrace a villain’s goals, and if a writer doesn’t have a balance to the evil he’s presented it won’t be anywhere near as satisfying. Dracula had his Van Helsing. The aliens had Lieutenant Ellen Ripley. A wimpy hero or a skittish villain would be disappointing to say the least. I think my villains are well-drawn—real enough to make the reader fear they might step off the page into a nightmarish reality.

What do you find frightening?

Real life horror—the Jeffrey Dahmer type. It scares me to think that those kinds of things are real, that people have horrible lusts and cravings like that. I can’t watch the news because the horror stories on it haunt me forever. I prefer horror that’s not real and can’t get me or anyone I love.

In what special way do you celebrate Halloween?

I write spooky stories for readers to scary themselves silly. I can’t imagine anything better.

I'd be a werewolf. One, because I hate the actual taste of blood and two, I love wolves and their social structure.
