Hey, everyone. Macy Beckett here, and while “no more books” certainly doesn’t apply to my situation, I haven’t delivered a good ol’ fashioned dirty look in almost eight years. (To a student, anyway. My own kids get the death glare on an hourly basis.) After nearly a decade in the classroom, I left teaching to stay home and write novels. Steamy novels. The kind you don’t want your eighth grader picking up!
How did that happen? Well, it started innocently enough with an extended maternity leave. I’d just delivered my second child, and I decided to take a few years off. I loved teaching junior high—seriously, I’m not just saying that—but I wanted more time with my little ones.
It was a difficult adjustment at first. It felt unnatural watching the neighborhood kids board the school bus knowing I wouldn’t be “on the other side” to greet them. I kept checking my school email for months, driving my former colleagues crazy. It took a while, but I eventually let go and learned to enjoy my new job as a stay-at-home-mom.
Fast forward three years.
I’ve been one busy Mama!
But more than that, I’ve discovered my passion. Will I ever return to the classroom? No, probably not. I still feel a tug of wistfulness at the beginning of the school year, but it’s not strong enough to pull me out of my own head. No offense to my former students, but my new career is way more fun.
