No More Reading, No More Books, No More Teacher’s Dirty Looks

Hey, everyone. Macy Beckett here, and while “no more books” certainly doesn’t apply to my situation, I haven’t delivered a good ol’ fashioned dirty look in almost eight years. (To a student, anyway. My own kids get the death glare on an hourly basis.) After nearly a decade in the classroom, I left teaching to stay home and write novels. Steamy novels. The kind you don’t want your eighth grader picking up!

How did that happen? Well, it started innocently enough with an extended maternity leave. I’d just delivered my second child, and I decided to take a few years off. I loved teaching junior high—seriously, I’m not just saying that—but I wanted more time with my little ones.

It was a difficult adjustment at first. It felt unnatural watching the neighborhood kids board the school bus knowing I wouldn’t be “on the other side” to greet them. I kept checking my school email for months, driving my former colleagues crazy. It took a while, but I eventually let go and learned to enjoy my new job as a stay-at-home-mom.

Fast forward three years.

I loved being home with the wee ones, but I was going a little stir crazy. I’d never realized how much of a creative outlet teaching had given me, and I missed it. So when a group of internet friends told me about NaNoWriMo—a challenge in which participants write 50k words towards a novel in 30 days—I decided to give it a shot. One month later, I had written a book! (A sci-fi YA in need of several rewrites, but which eventually sold to Disney-Hyperion.) The next book I wrote was SULTRY WITH A TWIST, followed by A SHOT OF SULTRY (coming in March), and SURRENDER TO SULTRY (coming next fall).

I’ve been one busy Mama!

But more than that, I’ve discovered my passion. Will I ever return to the classroom? No, probably not. I still feel a tug of wistfulness at the beginning of the school year, but it’s not strong enough to pull me out of my own head. No offense to my former students, but my new career is way more fun. 

I'm so glad you are enjoying your new career! Even if you don't return to the classroom, it's great to have that experience. Now you'll have the balance to play with your little ones and your characters. Congratulations on your release!

Thanks, Na! I'll say this, though: teaching made me tough, and that's helped me as an author because I'm less afraid to speak up and promote myself or ask for what I want. This business sure isn't for the meek!
