GUEST BLOG: MEG BENJAMIN

Loose Ends

When you write a series, as I do with my Konigsburg books, you inevitably leave some things hanging from one book to another. And then you sometimes get emails from readers asking why so-and-so isn’t married yet or whatever happened to some character who wandered through a couple of books ago.

Once of the things I wanted to do with Don’t Forget Me, was to tie up a few of those loose ends from the series, points I’d let slide but that I’d always wanted to fix. In a way, the hero and heroine of Don’t Forget Me—Nando Avrogado and Kit Maldonado—fall into that category. Both of them had appeared before in the series. In fact, Kit had appeared as a teenager in my very first book, Venus In Blue Jeans. But I brought them together and made them supporting characters in Long Time Gone, and I used Nando as a kind of second lead in Brand New Me. In Brand New Me, though, Nando was single, which led to an inevitable question: What happened to Kit? Don’t Forget Me gave me a chance to explore the answer and bring the two back together again.

Another loose end concerned a couple of major supporting characters—the baker Allie Maldonado and her long-time boyfriend Steve Kleinschmidt, better known as Wonder Dentist. These two first came together in Venus In Blue Jeans. They got engaged in Be My Baby. I even have a freebie short story about the moment when Allie first realized Wonder loved her. But—no wedding. Why not? Well, because I’d never found a way to work it in. So I decided early on that Don’t Forget Me would also include Allie and Wonder’s wedding because, you know, Allie’s been waiting long enough!

And finally, there’s the villain. A couple of readers pointed out to me once that my villains sometimes seem to get off without much in the way of punishment, given how nasty they’ve been. One villain in particular seemed to get away without any punishment at all, and that didn’t seem fair to me either. So he’s back in Don’t Forget Me—and this time he gets what he deserves.

Don’t Forget Me doesn’t depend on the other books—if you’ve never read Konigsburg book, you can still read it without any problems. But if you’ve gone through the Konigsburg saga with me, I hope Don’t Forget Me will have a little extra pizzazz. If nothing else, you’ll get to see Allie march down the aisle! And I’ll have a few less loose ends to tie up in future books!

Interesting thoughts. I wonder if you can ever really tie up all the loose ends.
